Amos McCoy is a Pennsylvania Licensed Auctioneer (AU-005824) based in Mercersburg, PA โ right in the heart of Franklin County. His love of auctions didn't start with a license or a business plan. It started when he was seven years old, sitting beside his mother at the Lemaster's Community Center while Auctioneer J. Robert Meyers called sale every Wednesday evening.
Those Wednesday nights shaped everything. By age seven, Amos was a regular fixture โ and before long, Mr. Meyers had him up front as a runner, wearing an oversized red "J. Robert Meyers Auctioneer" shirt that tucked in down to his knees. He wore it to every sale anyway. The auction community became his extended family, teaching him the value of honesty, hard work, and the stories behind the items that passed through their hands.
Amos also brings decades of real-world business experience โ including leadership in manufacturing, feed industry operations, and executive consulting. That background means he understands the business side of auctions, not just the gavel.
From a seven-year-old in an oversized red shirt to a licensed Pennsylvania auctioneer โ this is Amos's story.
Amos's mother used to take him to Wednesday evening auctions run by Auctioneer J. Robert Meyers. They didn't have much money, so they'd bid on box lots and spend the evening going through whatever they found. By age seven, they were fixtures. One night while his mother stepped away, Mr. Meyers sent for Amos to come up front as a runner โ and a career was born.
All of Mr. Meyers' helpers wore red shirts with his name on them. Amos wanted one badly. When he finally got one, it was so big it hung down to his knees โ but he wore it to every single sale. One evening Mr. Meyers offered to pay him to drop some linens on the floor just to see his mother's reaction. Amos refused. That night, Mr. Meyers stopped the auction to tell the whole crowd how honest the boy was. It was a moment Amos never forgot.
Working the sales each week, Amos developed a deep knowledge of antiques โ Majolica, Flow Blue, Heisey glass, Goofus glass, kerosene lamps, and local artwork. Auctioneer Marvin Amsley took him under his wing and quizzed him on glassware and furniture at every sale. Regular attendees became family. One of them, a man named Mr. Bratin, once bought a violin at auction just to give it to Amos after watching him bid on violin after violin for years, never able to win one.
Mr. Meyers always told Amos to finish his education and get a good job before becoming an auctioneer โ there was plenty of time for both. Amos listened. Years later, when his grandfather's estate went to auction and Marvin Amsley ran the sale, Marvin handed Amos the microphone midway through and told him to sell for a while. Stunned, Amos got up on the block. He knew immediately โ this was it. Marvin agreed to let him apprentice, and the rest is history.
"I consider myself very lucky to have been able to follow a childhood dream and actually see it all the way through."
